In reaction to the five-year Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill that was approved in the House yesterday, the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) has issued a press release, stating their concern “about the inclusion of alternative language relating to Section 336 that, while perhaps well-intentioned, places an extreme burden on the FAA, an agency already underfunded and understaffed,” and “this alternative language creates further ambiguity for the recreational community.” Read all the details in their press release below.

“We are, however, concerned about the inclusion of alternative language relating to Section 336 that, while perhaps well-intentioned, places an extreme burden on the FAA, an agency already underfunded and understaffed.”

Duh

The FAA is so understaffed, they should spin-off ATC as a separate entity. There are SO MANY issues they are ignoring... I’ll spare you another helicopter noise-pollution rant, but small airports in suburbia in the Southwest are now dealing with subscription-based scheduled airlines operating out of very small airports using 9 passenger turbo-prop planes that are very noisy. It’s the MAX size allowed for small General Aviation airports never built for this volume of traffic. They fly as many flights as they can squeeze-in (40+/day), with no real oversight by the FAA. There’s no priority to revisit it, and the FAA gets lobbied heavily to make no changes for any existing rule...

Santa Monica Airport will be closing in 2028 due to community pressure over noise and pollution issues. Like most people, I do not object to San Carlos as a general aviation airport. It is the obtrusive nature of Surf Air I object to...

I read the AMA’s response in its entirety, but don’t have a clue what they are referring to regarding “alternative language.” In claiming the Act creates ambiguity, you would think they’d be less ambiguous about what they are referring to.
